Quick Tech Note: Activating Home Sharing in iOS4.3
okay, now were alone apple havent done a great job of documenting the how-to for anything in ios4.3 yet and getting HomeSharing to work isnt straightforward tbh. on the iTunes version its easy, switch both machines on, log in, activate home sharing from menu and your libraries pop up on each machine.
idevices are a bit trickier. first: all your devices will need to be on the same wifi network: then you will need the bang up to date iTunes 10.2.1 running on host machine, then do your ios4.3 update to ipad, iPod, iPhone etc
once thats all done, turn on home sharing on the host machine.. Ill wait. dum dum dum dur .
ok, back to iDevices: in settings, go to your iPod menu, there’s a sparkly new box called ‘home sharing’, login using your iTunes account details (I won’t look). that should just login, doesn’t confirm or whatever. next, back to your iPod app, in the ‘More’ section, there will now be a magical new menu item called ‘Shared’, hit that and if everything has gone swimmingly you will now see your host library in that list. you can select that and your library list will now be selectable from the iDevices. cool huh. including streamed video! limitation: I use home sharing for resolving library purchases across my laptop, imac, and studio machine by importing anything I bought on one but need on another. you can’t do that with iOS onto your iDevices, it appears you can only stream not import, so purchases will still have to be resolved at sync time. hope this is useful! px
