I hate ragging on other sound engineers but when you hear fundamental mistakes like we just gritted our teeth and sat thru during the opening of the rugby challenge cup at wembley, you just have to sit back as an engineer and think “maybe I really over-complicated things today” the poor girl trying to sing ‘abide with me’ fell victim to that simplest of errors - an overly aggressive gate. her soft notes completely disappeared, the poor girl thinking she’d knackered the cable, but it wasn’t your fault poor soul. no, that rests with the true idiot who even after a whole verse hadn’t worked out where the threshold control was or even had the presence of mind to just hit ‘bypass’. oh well, some of our basic errors we make in glorious private, some in front of tens of thousands of unsympathetic fans. but there’s not one of who isn’t glad it didn’t happen to us.
